Best. Hostel. Ever. Well, besides Aille River Hostel in Doolin and Rainbow Hostel in Dingle. But, this is definitely the best one in Dublin. Clean comfy beds, and the same breakfast as the people staying at the attached b&b get! Which is a full Irish breakfast. So tasty...

Anyhoo, this is one of those signs telling you how far to all kinds of things, including "Tipperary: A long way"

This was in this parking garage where we went to see a play, still at the Galway Arts Festival. We were waiting for the play to start. Then we got kicked out of the parking garage so that they could finish their last rehearsal or something. The play was pretty sweet as well. It was about... things that happen in parking garages.

So this was a dance performance, and the only other free performance at the Galway Arts Festival (see below). It was pretty cool. The dancers were up on these poles that swung around and they just kept swinging and it was about coupling.

The Betty Big Shoes Parade

So, we went to this parade in the Galway Arts Festival, because it sounded great and because it was one of the 2 free things to do at the Festival while we were in Galway. Galway is amazing, btw. Anyhoo, this is the parade, a weird, LSD-induced Alice-in-Wonderland kind of affair, with a sort of story about Betty growing up or something. The pictures are in chronological order bottom-to-top, but this makes less sense than the parade itself so it probably doesn't matter how you look at them. Except that the only people who still read this are KPd and TMQ, who were of course there and remember the real thing.

Anyhoo, it was a sweet parade. And it turned out it was about this girl Betty, who had big shoes. Which was awesome.

Galway is like the Harvard Square of Ireland. It was wicked fun, and the hostel was another one of the best we stayed at. Way chill, like the Aile River Hostel ('Ostel) in Doolin. The dude who worked there made tiramisou and shared it with us. But that wasn't till the last night, when the cute French guys decided that because it was after midnight they could speak English to us, after we'd made complete arses of ourselves the whole week trying to speak French. Anyhoo, this is an alley near the harbor, and another potential album cover shot =D

So, this one we're having in the so-called best pub in Ireland (I liked The Celt better; and the pubs in Doolin). This was our reward for climbing Croagh Patrick. Not that we didn't go to pubs nearly ever other night of the trip as well...

At 762 meters above sea level (do your own damn conversion... I'm tired), Croagh Patrick is a mountain many climb as a pilgrimage to honor St. Patrick. So we climbed it too. It was high, but we made it up and back in time to catch the bus home again. Then we had another amazing dinner, courtesy of chez whatever hostel we were staying in (by chefs KPd and myself). Then we slept in a tent.

So the big hero of the day was T the Q, who climbed the whole mountain barefoot, as St. Patrick did when he prayed all the snakes out of Ireland. The last quarter to third of the climb was wicked steep and rocky, like this. We all needed those walking sticks.

There was a chapel at the summit, and many people milling about. Some were doing the second Station, most were eating food and drinking water. The fog (or, cloud, at that altitude) was thick.

We reached the summit! And TMQ did it all barefoot! It would've been cool to see the view from the top, but at the same time it was pretty amazing to be in the middle of a cloud and just feel so removed from the rest of the world. It was pretty surreal and amazing.

so we'd all bought tin whistles in doolin, inspired by all that music there. we decided to figure out how to play them. not too hard, but still takes practice... the wind never helped either.

another time, we were playing at this beach with a seal colony on it. we'd hoped to see seals, but the seals were not around. so we decided to practice our whistles instead. we were all playing different songs at once, and all off-key, and a tour bus pulled up and a bunch of tourists got out. the tour guide told his tour that we were playing for the seals, and that the seals like music. and the tourists believed it! now, what we were playing was only music under the loosest definition of the word, but sure enough some seals started poking their heads up! we should have asked the tourists for a round for bringing the seals for them. or they should have thought of it themselves.

we biked all over Inis Mor. the hardest part was remembering to stay on the left. which was simple, compared to in killarney national park when the hardest part was getting up the massive hill.

this was at Dun Aengus fort on Inis Mor. the fort was on a big cliff, and made with stones in big rings. kp found this cool place to sit and look out at forever. and at the atlantic ocean. even though these cliffs were a third to a half the size of the Cliffs of Moher, they felt way higher somehow; maybe because we could see the water way down below better or something.

so i'd just realized i had no economic safety net (read: credit card), and i had little money. and we were on inis mor (there are accents over some vowels, but i don't know how to put them in here), where i intended to get wicked expensive gifts for my family. so after i also realized i couldn't get in touch with my parents, KPd took us to this old old church she'd found a year earlier, that's no longer in use but is just in the middle of a cow pasture. so we went over, and climbed in a window. and there was a tree growing right up in the middle of it, since the missing roof let in sun and all. it was so chill. yay.

so this is on inis ir, the smallest of the aran islands. there are rock walls everywhere, out of lack of anything better to do with the rocks. then there's a castle up at the top of the hill. this was something better to do with the rocks, only after it was done there were still many more rocks. the whole area is pretty rocktastic. and rawktastic. well, this island actually didn't have much besides the walls and the castle, but the one we stayed on (inis mor) was great. oh except for the weird passive-aggressive kiwi hostel staff. maybe new zealand kicked them out; they reflect pretty poorly on a mighty friendly country.

this is the bodhran player KPd had a crush on. he was really good at playing. this is in one of the 3 pubs in the town. if it looks like this picture was taken from the floor, that's because it was. the pub was packed, so the only place to sit was on the floor. but hey, front row! then this girl did a dance with a broom--like, a traditional broom dance--just because she wanted to. so cool.

ok, this part of the trek was less moonscapey and more cliffy. that rock wall in the foreground is there to keep the cows in. or because there are a lot of rocks and they had to do something with them. but there was evidence of cows too. we hoped not the kind that charged and mauled people. but we didn't see any anyhoo.

this is a moonscape in the burren, near doolin.
doolin was one of my favorite places in ireland.
it had the best hostel, and the best trad, ever.
then we went on an adventure up the moonscape coast through wet air and across jagged rock, and leaping crevasses, and dodging bulls, and jumping brambles, and climbing over stone walls and metal fences, and running from bees, and getting lost, and searching for castles, and falling down, and getting up again, and then finally making it home.

Usually they're being stupid and risky at the time. So everyone gets down and crawls up to the edge to peek over. When you do, you see tiny tiny birds flying around waaaay underneath you. Cool, but scary. It's always a little windy up there.

So these are the cows we passed on the way back from seeing Fungie the Dolphin, and the CIA. We saw them on the way there as well, but I took the picture on the way back. Don't tell customs I walked through a cow pasture, even if the dude at Dublin Airport said it didn't count =/
There were heaps of cows in Ireland. So cute! And check out their grass-fed-ness... not that I really know much about whether factory farms exist in Ireland.

So in Dingle, there's this dolphin that lives in the harbor named Fungie or Fungy or something (soft 'g')... One could spend 25 euro to take a boat out to see the dolphin, or hike out to this chill spot (tho, less chill when the CIA was there) and watch from there. So we chose the latter. And we still saw the dolphin. There was also this dude in a wetsuit trying to swim with Fungie, but the boats kept coming and distracting the dolphin, so the poor guy got left high and... well, wet, with no dolphin-swimming. A couple people with surfboards succeeded soon after he'd given up, if memory serves.
The rest of Dingle was chill as well, with the best lunch ever (fish stew and murphy's stout) and also the best afternoon tea ever (tea... and scones), and the best ice cream ever (honeycomb. the states should have that flavor. the bailey's flavor was also good).

We were troopers, camping on the lawn there... The picture doesn't show the evidence of dog, but it left only one exact spot for the tent to go and not get ew. But, pretty site! Even if we did have to walk around the block to go to the bathroom at night... Until we realized we didn't have to...
We had the same view from the kitchen, where we drank tea with some guys who'd been there a week waiting to take a boat to the Skellig Rocks. It was cool.

One had all this writing inside with some white paint or something, and looked like the meeting place for some weird secret society or something. Freaky...

Actually this might be a storage house thing. But these houses, and many others, some as old as 800 years, were brought to the Folkmuseum in Oslo. Some people work in the museum in period costume, like at Old Sturbridge Villiage or Plymouth Plantation (or the non-MA equivilants). These have grass roofs.

Tara captains the Fram, which is easier now that the ship is in a museum. But it was way more difficult when Amundsen used it to get to Antarctica when he made the first ever trip to the South Pole, and especially when he or somebody else got it stuck in Arctic ice flows for a few months. Well, i guess the captaining part wasn't as hard then, but it was pretty damn cold.

This is a Munch painting of a wicked cool dude. I mean, look at him! He's an author or something. We really like him. We like Munch too, or at least his paintings. Shrik (the Scream) is amazing. So amazing that it got stolen in the 90's sometime. The museum defended itself, "We didn't expect anybody to use a ladder!" referring to the theif who had climbed into a window instead of using a door. But Shrik is back. And amazing.

Within the old area of Bergen, one finds cool narrow alleys like this. We chilled right around here for about 3 hours before discovering we were blocking the famous Norwegian pink mineral (damned if I know what it's called) that was on all the tours from docked cruise ships. Oops.

A fjord (pron. fyord) is a glacial valley that is partially filled with water. I'm not sure if it has to be ocean water, but I think it does. This is along the boat trip to see some fjords near Bergen.
